How to Prepare for Your Newborn PhotoshootBy your Cambridgeshire Newborn Photographer

So, you’ve booked in your newborn photoshoot -yay! First of all, thank you for choosing me to capture such a precious, fleeting time in your life. Whether you’re still in that new baby bubble or running on coffee and cuddles (same thing, right?), I want you to know that this whole experience is meant to feel calm, relaxed, and most of all – enjoyable.

After photographing countless little ones across the county as a Cambridgeshire newborn photographer, I’ve picked up a few gentle tips to help your session run as smoothly (and sleepily!) as possible.

Keep It Simple: What to Wear

I always say less is more when it comes to what you wear during your session. Think soft whites, creams, greys or other plain, neutral colours. Avoid bold prints or big logos, they can be a bit distracting and pull focus away from those tiny toes and squishy cheeks we’re really here for.

And don’t stress about having to buy a whole new wardrobe either, honestly, a plain white tee or a soft knit jumper can look absolutely beautiful in photos. The idea is to keep everything soft, calm and timeless.

Feed the Baby, Then We Photograph the Baby

If possible, give baby a really good feed just before I arrive (or as I set up, whichever feels more natural on the day). A full tummy = a content, sleepy baby, and that’s where the magic happens. Don’t worry if we spend the first hour chatting with a cuppa as you feed, we always follow baby’s lead. Being a midwife for ten years taught me that’s the only way! I can even help with breastfeeding or bottle feeding advice if needed as I spent time as a Newborn Feeding Coordinator.

Siblings Welcome (No Pressure Though!)

If you’ve got toddlers or older children, I totally understand how it can feel a bit chaotic. My number one piece of advice? Don’t put pressure on them. The more relaxed we all are, the more natural their interactions will be. If they want to join in, great. If they’d rather run around in a superhero cape or hide under a blanket, that’s fine too. We roll with it!

Your Home is Perfect As It Is

Please, please don’t tidy up for me. I’m not coming to judge your laundry pile or inspect your floors, I’m coming to capture love and connection. Sometimes all we need is one plain wall or a spot near a window with soft, natural light. I bring along my own white and cream blankets to style baby on your sofa or bed, nothing fancy needed. Just your family, your home, and your story.

It’s Meant to Be Easy

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about pausing time. My style is soft, natural and fuss-free, and your session will be too. I’ll guide you every step of the way, and we’ll go at baby’s pace. No rigid poses, no harsh lighting, just those beautifully ordinary, heart-full moments you’ll want to remember forever.

So take a deep breath, wear something comfy, and tell me about your birth story if you want to. I’ll take care of the rest.

Can’t wait to meet your little one,
Roxy
